N1Records 2014 Artists Announced

Four artists have signed to the Northern Sound System’s N1 Records for 2014, following the success of the artist development program in 2013.

N1 Records, which runs from the Northern Sounds System (NSS) in conjunction with the City of Playford and ArtsSA, has signed musicians Alexandra Conway (dark pop artist), Elsa Grace (country pop), Patriotic Tongues (hip hop duo) and Hannah Yates (indie soul artist) for the 12-month industry development program.

It comes after 2013 N1 Records artist, Tkay Maidza, was signed to a management deal and continues to tour across Australia at festivals such as Groovin’ the Moo, Splendour in the Grass and Listen Out and receives regular airplay on national radio station, Triple J.

NSS Project and Training Officer, Nick O’Connor, said the program gives local talent an insight into what is required of a professional artist and provides an avenue to showcase their music to a wider audience, including record labels.

“It’s tough breaking into the music industry, you need all the support you can get,” Nick said. “Through the N1 Records Program we have created a record label experience which teaches local talent the practical skills of the music business.

“We’ve signed up four talented and creative artists who just need a bit of leg up into the industry,” Nick continued. “They’re all amazing artists in their own right and big sign of the ongoing music talent coming out of the north.”

The artists will learn first-hand the skills required to succeed in the music industry, receiving experience in song writing and production processes and working with industry professionals to produce and develop promotional material including music videos, photos and biographies.

A new addition to the program for 2014 includes the opportunity for the artists to attend QMusic’s Bigsound Conference and Festival in Brisbane, where Adelaide’s Tkay Maidza, Jimblah and Bad Dreems will perform alongside Australia’s next generation of artists.

“The chance to rub shoulders with professionals and learn about their journey into the industry will be invaluable,” Nick said.
